US urges Nepal's preparedness on twin anniversaries of quakes
THT ONLINE KATHMANDU: The United States has urged Nepal to learn lessons from the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 1934 Nepal earthquake and be prepared for a major possible disaster to come.
Issuing a press release on Tuesday by the US Embassy in Kathmandu on the occasion of the anniversaries of both the earthquakes which are being marked this week, it has also stressed on Nepal’s need for better building construction, first-responder training, and raising awareness among the general public about what is to be done in the event of a disaster.
The US government has also cautioned and urged to learn lessons in order to save lives, reduce human suffering, and ensure Nepal will not be “another Haiti.”
However, the U.S. applauded Nepal’s recent inauguration of the Emergency Operations Center located on the grounds of the Home Ministry. “This is an important step in establishing a communication hub for the coordination of humanitarian assistance”, reads the statement.
The two tragic disasters of the past had claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and millions of people were injured or displaced.
A devastating earthquake that struck the island nation of Haiti on January 12, last year, had killed over 220,000 people and injured 300,000, leaving nearly 2 million people homeless.
