Gala show marks NTY launch

HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE KATHMANDU: President Ram Baran Yadav today formally inaugurated Nepal Tourism Year 2011 amid a gala ceremony at Dasharath Stadium here.

This campaign will re-establish the image of Nepal as the Himalayan Shangri-La, as it used to be depicted in 1970s and that it is no more a conflict-ridden country, said Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal while addressing the ceremony.

We should not be satisfied with achieving the target of one million tourists but work towards increasing the average stay of tourists from 12 to 16 days and doubling their average daily expenditure, he added.

Tourism is a way of bringing economic revolution in Nepal, as it an industry with high returns, said Sharat Singh Bhandari, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, adding that tourism is an effective tool for achieving a prosperous, peaceful and stable Nepal.

The inaugural ceremony of the much-hyped national campaign was attended by up to 8,000 guests, including President, Prime Minister, Ministers, leaders of political parties and high-level bureaucrats, including international dignitaries from SAARC countries,as well as United Nations World Tourism Organisations general secretary.

The campaign with slogans Together for Tourism, Tourism for Prosperity and Prosperity for Stability identifying tourism as a means to achieve economic prosperity that will consequently bring political stability, started with relay of the Eternal Lamp from Lumbini, that was passed through private sectors representatives, labour union representatives and political leaders and then taken to Mt Amadublam.

The ceremony saw colourful processions from ethnic groups.

Along with the procession, the stadiums skyline was covered with para-motor gliders that flew over with the slogans of NTY 2011.

Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force also performed at the ceremony. !
