UML SC urges NC to withdraw its candidacy
RSS KATHMANDU: The Standing Committee meeting of the CPN (UML) on Tuesday, on behalf of the party, has urged the Nepali Congress (NC) for the last time to withdraw the prime ministerial candidacy filed by its Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel.
The 17th round of the elections for the post of the prime minister is going to be held in the Parliament tomorrow and Poudel is the lone candidate in the polls.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, CPN (UML) General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel said the meeting decided to implement the fifth Central Committee meeting's decision to vote against Poudel if the NC does not pull out Poidel's candidacy.
The party, however, has expected that the NC would not force it to take such step, he added.
Though the party's senior leader and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had sent a written request to Party Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal asking to call the CC meeting at the earliest to reconsider the decision taken by the previous meeting, no agreement to this regard has been reached yet, it is said.
Also talking to media, Chief Whip of the CPN (UML) Parliamentary Party, Bhim Acharya said that he has already circulated a whip to the party lawmakers to vote against Poudel if his candidacy is not taken back.
The NC, in a meeting with the CPN (UML) on Monday, had warned that it would pull out of the current ruling alliance if the former voted against Poudel.
The CPN (UML) called the meeting by canceling the sixth CC meeting that was scheduled for January 9.
