KATHMANDU: Police have now gone hi-tech. Metropolitan Police Crime Division has provided Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker to some persons who have returned to society after serving time in jail.

GPS tracker helps police monitor their movement. SSP Rana Bahadur Chand said the device was used on six persons, including Kumar Ghainte of Maharajgunj and Bagh Bahadur Lama. They were recently released after serving their sentence for abduction and extortion. It is mandatory for them to take the tracker wherever they go round-the-clock. Their movement can be monitored via the tracker connected to the internet.

We adopted the technology to ensure that a convict who returns to society will improve, said SSP Chand, adding It has proved effective in monitoring their activities in society. We are making preparations to monitor more people with this technology.
