Fraudsters giving foreign job seekers a tough time
RAM KUMAR KAMAT NEW DELHI: Fraud is fast becoming rampant in the Nepali foreign employment sector. Sugary dreams of earning a better living in foreign land have turned into a nightmare for victims and their families.
Ramesh Poudel (32) of Nawalparasi was defrauded of Rs 2.5 lakh by one Dipak Malla promising him of getting him a security guard job paying 3,000 Dirham. In addition to that, Poudel has already spent Rs 1.5 lakh to sustain himself in the foreign city.
Bishal Poudel (20) of the same district, Bishnu Shahi (36) of Tanahun and Madan Kumar Rai of Sunsari were also coaxed into parting with Rs 4 lakh each – two lakh in Kathmandu and two more in Delhi – by the same person in exchange for jobs in Afghanistan paying $1,200 a month.
The four men were brought to New Delhi two months ago by Malla and his accomplices assuring them they would be able to fly to their destinations within days. But that never happened as Malla was nowhere to be seen after pocketing the money.
“We never thought we would end up like this,” Bishal said. “We want to return home but don’t even have the money to buy train tickets.” Ramesh was flown to Sarjah in the first week of November, only to learn that he could not leave the airport as his visa was forged.
“The documents looked perfectly fine. I never suspected that they could be forged,” Ramesh said recounting the horrid story of having to sleep on the airport floor for 15 days with all his money spent on food. Help came but neither from Malla’s associates nor from his UAE contact Krishna Khanal. Ramesh’s friend bought him the air ticket to Kathmandu. He returned only to be coaxed again into a new Malla scam to land in Delhi.
The victims said one JB Thapa, Jeevan Lama, and David Lama were Malla’s henchmen. “It is not that we were not aware of incidents of fraud in foreign employment. But the way they acted never aroused suspicion,” Ramesh said.
According to the victims, Malla is the Managing Director of a Kathmandu-based manpower consultancy firm.
The case with Bishal, Madan and Bishnu is slightly different. In the first week of October, Malla’s men told them that they would be flown to their destinations within a week. But that never happened.
Ramesh, Madan and Bishnu have not told their families about the disaster that has befallen on them fearing that it would shock the family. “We are not going to suffer in silence. We will definitely lodge an FIR in Nepal,” Bishal said.
