Fertiliser crunch affects farmers

HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE BHAJHANG: Farmers in Bajhang are facing a scarcity of fertilisers.

Hundreds of farmers from remote areas are compelled to return empty-handed from the District Agriculture Office, which was tasked with the distribution of fertilisers after the Agriculture Input Corporation failed to do so.

Dil Bahadur Bohora , proprietor of Jalapadevi Suppliers, the company responsible for transporting the fertilisers to the district, said the agriculture authorities had permitted only his company to bring in AIC-provided fertilisers as the fertilisers available in the market are of substandard quality. Bohora revealed he had to return empty-handed from the Dhangadhi-based AIC office as the office had a shortage of fertilisers. According to Gorakh Khadka, a farmer, the unavailability of fertilisers has disappointed hundreds of farmers. “In a situation like this, how can one expect the crop yield to increase?” asked a farmer.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the district’s quota of fertilisers is 240 metric tonnes of urea, potash and DAP. But only 32.5 metric tonnes of urea, 18 metric tonnes of DAP and 0.5 metric tonnes of potash have been supplied to the district till date.
