Maoists to pitch for Prachanda as consensus prime minister

HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE KATHMANDU: The standing committee meeting of the Unified CPN-Maoist today decided to hold parleys with the parties for a Maoist-led consensus government. President Dr Ram Baran Yadav yesterday asked the parties to decide on a consensus government within a week.

The party will stick to its previous decision to present Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal as the new PM, said UCPN-M Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma after the meeting.

Standing Committee member close to Vice-Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, proposed Dr Bhattarai as the leader of the parliamentary party and new PM. However, the party decided to first ensure that the UCPN-M heads the government without identifying the PMs candidate.

The meeting entrusted the central office bearers to take necessary decision on handing over the PLA cantonments to the Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. The meeting decided to organise a special function to hand over PLA camps and take necessary decision on government formation, Parliament and partys training programmes slated to begin from Monday, Sharma said.

Chairman Dahal presented a report on the contemporary political situation of the country, political developments and UNMINs exit.

Party Secretary CP Gajurel said the party had opposed the governments claim that the Special Committee had fixed January 18 for the handover of PLA camps.

He said the task force led by General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa had presented its report, along with the basis for the promotion in the Central Committee. Since there are hundreds of competent leaders to be promoted in the Central Committee we have decided to continue discussions on the agenda to devise appropriate criteria, he said. The issue of extension of CC was aborted earlier.

The party also condemned the murder of partys Sanghiyahi VDC member Ram Chandra Yadav! last ni ght and demanded immediate action against the culprits, besides providing appropriate compensation to his family. Yadav was killed following his abduction.
