Form unity govt within a week: Prez
HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE KATHMANDU: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today urged political parties to elect a new prime minister and form the council of ministers within one week under Article 38 (1) of the Interim Constitution, a press statement issued by the Presidents Office said.
The president set January 21 as the last date for parliament to elect a
new prime minister on consensus basis.
The presidents call follows Speaker Subas Nembangs briefing of January 13 in which he informed that all three prime ministerial candidates Jhala Nath Khanal of UML,
Pushpa Kamal Dahal of UCPN-M and Ram Chandra Paudel of NC had pulled out of the race.
Parliament began the PMs election process on July 21 after political parties failed to form a consensus government following Prime Minister Madhav
Kumar Nepals resignation on June 30.
The president then invited the parties to elect a PM on majority basis on July 13.
Khanal first withdrew his candidacy when he failed to garner the support of two-third lawmakers as per the condition put forth by his partys central committee. Dahal pulled out of the race after the eighth run-off. Paudel remained the sole candidate but failed to secure majority even for the 16th time. The 17th run-off was scheduled for January 12 but he pulled out of the race after the UML decided to vote against him.
But leaders of major
political parties doubt a consensus government will be formed.
Nothing can be said right now, said Narayankaji Shrestha, UCPN-M parliamentary party leader, As the largest party, the UCPN-M must be allowed to form the government.
Laxman Prasad Ghimire, NC chief whip, said the ball was on the Maoist and UML courts. Ghimire said his party pulled out of the race on January 12 to pave the way for a unity government. He, however, warned that a unity government would be elusive if the major parties stuck to over le! ading it .
Bhim Acharya, UML chief whip, said the Maoists and NC must show flexibility.
