DIWAKAR BHANDARI
PATHLAIYA: Goalkeeper Ashok Baral saved Jitendra Karkis spot kick as Swoyambhu Club defeated New Road Team (NRT) 5-4 in sudden death to enter the quarter-finals of the second Simara Gold Cup here today.
Bibek Limbu converted the deciding spot kick after goalkeeper Barals heroics. The match was decided on penalties after both the teams failed to score in the regular 80 minutes and the 20-minute added-on period. Baral was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
Both teams were tied at 4-4 in tie breaker before the match was decided in the seventh sudden death penalty. Swoyambhu custodian Baral saved Jitendras attempt and Bibek converted his spot kick to ignite a wild celebration at the newly promoted A Division outfit dugout.
Sunil Basnet, Raju Thapa Magar, Prabin Shrestha and Arun KC also converted their spot kicks for Swoyambhu, while Milan Gurung and Pappu Chhetry failed to score. For NRT, Chandra Rana, Raju Prajapati, Bishnu Limbu and Laxman Ruchal scored from the spot, whereas Subash Gurung, Raju Gurung and Jitendra Karki missed their target.
NRT coach Raju Kaji Shakya rued the missed opportunities and blamed the strikers for their poor finishing. We had to make an early exit from the tournament after the players failed to capitalise on the created chances," said Shakya, who saw Rajan Adhikaris shot return to play hitting the cross bar. The luck was also not our part today, he added. On Wednesday, Friends Club of Lalitpur will take on Gorkha Boys Sports Club of Butwal.
