Municipal staff warn meddlesome parties of stir
ITAHARI: The employees of Itahari municipality have threatened to launch a decisive agitation if the 13 political parties, including the UCPN-Maoist and the Nepali Congress, try to violate the rule of law in the name of investigating irregularities in the municipality. The employees affiliated to the Nepal Municipality Employees Association (NMEA) issued such a warning after the 13 parties formed a committee to probe the alleged irregularities and issued a February 6 deadline to the employees to provide necessary information to the committee.
Speaking at a press meet today, NMEA unit committee chairman Mahesh Subedi argued that the committee does not have the legal authority to conduct a probe. He said, Only constitutional bodies are authorised to probe the activities of government agencies.
He also requested the parties not to harass the employees, who have been working on behalf of local-level political representatives in the latters absence.
Yesterday, the parties had warned of taking strong steps against the employees, including engineer Arjun Dahal, for misbehaving with them and not cooperating with the probe committee formed under civil society leaders.
The parties, claiming that the irregularities are rampant in the municipality, had told the employees concerned to furnish necessary information within February 6.
Engineer Dahal, however, said they had refused to cooperate with the committee as per the directives of the executive officer Ganesh Dahal.
Yesterday, Dahal had directed the employees not to cooperate with the committee after the Ministry of Local Development made it clear that political parties cannot form such a committee.
